Santa Clara asks Apple to cancel events

Santa Clara County has issued a new directive to combat the spread of coronavirus, asking large tech companies based in Cupertino, Mountain View, Palo Alto and San Jose to avoid unnecessary travel and to organize large events.

There Santa Clara County it houses numerous technology companies, including Apple in Cupertino, Google in Mountain View, Tesla in Palo Alto, Netflix in Los Gatos and many others. Also other companies that are not based in the area, but have important offices that could be affected by the measure.

The guidance provided by the Santa Clara Department of Public Health is designed to “protect county residents from coronavirus disease“. County recommended to employers of:

  • Suspend non-essential employee travel.
  • Minimize the number of employees who work a short distance from each other, including reducing or canceling large meetings and conferences
  • Encourage employees to stay home when they are ill and maximize flexibility in sick leave benefits.
  • A doctor’s note is not required for employees who are sick as health offices can be very busy and unable to provide such documentation immediately.
  • Consider using telecommuting options for appropriate employees.
  • Consider managing start and end times to prevent large numbers of people from meeting at the same time.

Santa Clara County officials also recommend companies to consider “the postponement or cancellation of mass gatherings and large events in which a large number of people are within a short distance of each other“.

Even if it is only a matter of recommendations, that of the county of Santa Clara is an invitation to avoid demonstrations such as the next WWDC to be held in June. Time is in favor of Apple, given that the event is still 3 months away, but the possibility that WWDC 2020 will be held only remotely is not to be discarded.
